Unofficial Offical Playlist/Soundtrack List Type Thingee

It may seem crazy to make up a list of songs or soundtrack for a book, but I found that picking a series of songs that I feel fit the theme/mood of my writing helped with the flow of the narrative the last successful times. I'm Your Man

Ah, the moon's too bright
The chain's too tight
The beast won't go to sleep
I've been running through these promises to you
That I made and I could not keep
Ah but a man never got a woman back
Not by begging on his knees
Or I'd crawl to you baby
And I'd fall at your feet
And I'd howl at your beauty
Like a dog in heat
And I'd claw at your heart
And I'd tear at your sheet
I'd say please, please
I'm your man

Stay (Far Away,So Close)

Red light, grey morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim it depends on who's around
You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip synch to the talk shows

Character profiles: Reoccurring Minor Characters

A brief description of some the of minor characters I have planned:

Simon Fererra
– Kaitlyn’s patrol partner and closest thing she has to a normal, stable relationship. Unaware of Kaitlyn’s double life. Somewhat of a bigot and racist.

Dr. Laura Whitehorse
– Professor of Native Studies at the University of Alberta and parapsychologist. Met Kaitlyn first working as a volunteer at the university’s sexual assault center. Became a personal therapist and teacher to Kaitlyn to aid in her controlling her transformations. Has a keen interest in meeting Seth, but he does not share the same interest because her lack of being Jennifer Love Hewitt

Pastor William Love – Patriarch of the Love family and head of the New Sarepta Church of the People, an extreme anti-vampire group. Extremely bigoted and narrow minded. Has condemned any nation wishing to grant rights to vampires doomed. Finds himself on various nations’ terrorist watch list because of extremely religious ideology.

Clarice Stanfield
– Matriarch of the Stanfield vampire clan, an influential and affluent clan in the Edmonton community. Staunch defender of the status quo. Becomes more vocal as Grant’s successful lawsuit gains notoriety within the community. Along with Grant’s sire, wishes to use Grant as a martyr for an impending war with the “normal mortals” – her derogatory term for humans.

Anya – Grant’s sire and current sheriff of the Edmonton vampire community. Fairly powerful and seductive. Reluctant supporter of a current, yet uneasy, truce with members of the werewolf community.

Amy Moore
- British nurse and co-worker of Grant’s. Was not aware of him being a vampire until he outs himself during his lawsuit. Doesn’t seem to be afraid of that fact. Slightly annoys Grant because of her own minor prejudices and misconceptions.

Sergei Koloff
– Professional werewolf hunter from the Ukraine. Has been obsessed with wiping werewolves from existence since one was responsible for his sister’s death. Brought in to Edmonton by an unknown private benefactor. Works alongside the Edmonton Police Service, in particular Kaitlyn and Simon, who are the lead investigators when a series of deaths point to a werewolf. Becomes romantically interested in Kaitlyn, unaware of her secret as well.

Character Profile: Seth Rollins

Seth Rollins – “Jasper the Douchebag Ghost”

Seth Rollins’ death was quite ironic, if not darkly amusing. After starting up a Young Adult Atheist club on the University of Alberta campus, Seth got ran over by a drunk priest after the club’s first meeting. While his mortal body was buried back in his hometown, Seth found out his spirit did not make the same journey as he haunted the same priest who ended his life so prematurely. Eventually the priest ended up taking his own life, thinking the ghost Seth was a manifestation of his own sins coming back to haunt him. Seth then thought he would cross over with his unresolved issue now resolved, but perhaps as a continuation of fate’s cruel joke nothing happened. Seth then found himself wandering around in limbo in various parts of Edmonton, eventually taking up residence in a semi-finished condominium development. A bit of a prankster in his university days and still maintaining his brain from those days, Seth found solace in fooling around with contractors and other workers on the site, and eventually tenants of the suite. Seth’s luck almost ran out when current tenant Kaitlyn Russo moved in and was annoyed with his antics, specifically Seth randomly sifting through her underwear drawer. However Seth later found himself at the mercy of Kaitlyn during one of her transformations and had been fearful of her since. Since most people’s reaction to Seth has been to run away screaming, no one would believe him about a werewolf living among normal people, and Kaitlyn reluctantly found herself a confidant. Seth still does little things to annoy his roommates and has given little to no information on what else he could have unresolved. Seth insists on having Jennifer Love Hewitt to communicate him, despite being an actress and not a real ghost whisperer. Seth also has a bizarre request of if being exorcised, he wishes for the original Ghost Busters (the ones with the gorilla, not Slimer) to take him down. Think of Seth Rollins as if Casper the Friendly Ghost got mixed in with Beetlejuice – making Casper’s evil cousin Jasper the Douchebag Ghost.

Character Profile: Kaitlyn Russo

Kaitlyn Russo – Trying to Control the Beast Within

Kaitlyn Russo always had an inquisitive and investigative mind. Born into a family with five generations involved in law enforcement, one would say Kaitlyn had policing in her blood. A true motivating factor in her career path became clearer for her during her high school graduation. While attending a bush party, Kaitlyn met a man who would forever change her life This mystery man kept bringing drinks to Kaitlyn the entire evening and later would leave with her off to a secluded part of the woods away from the ongoing party. Most of the evening from that point on remains a blur to Kaitlyn to this day, with only knowing that a farmer found her the next day: clothes tattered and torn, slightly incoherent, and showed signs of being sexually assaulted. While seeking counseling for the ordeal she went through, Kaitlyn found out another event happened to her that night – she inherited the abilities of a lycanthrope or most commonly known as a werewolf. Whether she got it from her date rapist or an unknown person who may have come to her rescue remains a mystery to this day. For most parts, Kaitlyn can control her transformations from her human form to wolf to full lycanthrope. However there was a period of time where her transformations led to a series of deaths in Edmonton that were later covered up by Kaitlyn once she returned to her human form. Most of the deaths were men suspected or known to be repeat sex offenders and solicitors of street prostitution. As suggested by Kaitlyn’s therapist/spiritual healer, it could have been part of Kaitlyn’s subconscious seeking out justice for her own unsolved crime. After a close call and nearly being caught, Kaitlyn increased her therapy and meditation techniques, and has been able to control the urges since. But working as a respected homicide and violent crimes detective, Kaitlyn Russo finds herself always balancing life as a normal, hard-nosed investigator and keeping the beast within her under control.

Character Profile: Grant Roberts

Grant Roberts – Your Typical “Atypical Vampire”

Grant Roberts appears to be like any other young male in his twenties, except he is nearing his hundred and twenties. Grant was originally a corporal in the British Army during World War I and was one of the few from his infantry unit to come back alive during the end days of the war. However, post-war life for Grant was not easy. He constantly had nightmares about his actions during the war, and later is diagnosed with the influenza virus that begun to kill millions across the globe in 1918. Not wanting to die and leave his fiancĂ©e and unborn child alone, Grant struck a peculiar arrangement with a mysterious military nurse named Anya; she would cure him of his mortal ills but for a price. With thinking he has nothing to lose, Grant takes up the offer and is turned into a vampire. Shortly after his transformation, Grant is forced into a period of indentured servitude to his sire Anya – where the two of them feed on various citizens and using the pandemic as a cover for their deeds. However, Grant begins to show signs of remorse for his actions and after a test of loyalty to Anya goes south, he is excommunicated from his newfound people. Unable to return to his normal life, Grant spends many of the decades bouncing from country to country; trying to find a place he can truly fit in. He would truly find that place until coming to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada – a city that has recently been established as a safe haven for vampires despite the strict federal Vampire Registries Act passed in 2001. However Grant still finds himself lost in a world where he doesn’t fit in with normal humans and is persona non grata within most of the vampire community.

Just a quick note re: the videos

Wasn't too sure if I was clear in the introduction post here but a lot of the video selections here I have been making are just songs I have been cherry picking for what I think are going to be some of the central or minor themes of the upcoming project. Think of them as an informal soundtrack or playlist.

That is all. I may do brief character bios tomorrow. Stay tuned, as the tale begins in 5 days...

Private Investigations

Treachery and treason
There's always an excuse for it
And when I find the reason
I still can't get used to it

(In)Human Nature - Official Preview

Meet Grant Roberts. For most parts, he appears to be a normal man in his late twenties. He works mostly the graveyard shift as a nursing assistant at the Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton. He owns a trendy condominium loft that he shares with his two best friends – homicide detective Kaitlyn Russo and permanent slacker/schemer Seth Rollins. All three would appear to be normal members of society, but a series of events shall unfold that will reveal each of their secrets to the fair city of Edmonton – and the world itself.

After taking a suggestion that was intended as a joke, Grant launch a class-action lawsuit against the mainstream’s portrayal of his people. The outcome sees Grant becoming a very reluctant spokesman for a group of vampires seeking equal rights akin to the living. Rights that would see vampires in Canada no longer treated like criminals or prisoners of war. This movement draws opposition from a united affluent vampire community within Edmonton to an extreme-right wing religious group bent on making sure that not only their message that “God Hates Fangs” is heard across the globe, but any nation thinking of giving rights to vampires will be doomed to His wrath.

Meanwhile, Kaitlyn is in the middle of an investigation involving a series of mysterious deaths that seemingly have no real connection to one another – except each of the victim was found at every scene nearly torn to shreds. Trying to keep her own secret being exposed, Kaitlin’s life is turned upside down when she believes she might be responsible for those deaths, despite keeping her transformations under control for nearly three years now. Further complications arise also when a mysterious benefactor brings in a specialist – a renowned werewolf hunter from the Ukraine, who is smitten with Kaitlyn, and unaware that she too is a werewolf and may be the one he was brought in to slay.

Seth, on the other hand, has no real pressing issues he wishes to resolve. Being dead for nearly a decade and haunting the condo that Kaitlyn first bought five years ago, Seth spends most of the time trying to keep his odd couple-like roommates grounded somewhat in reality and avoiding any discussions about his past for fear of finally crossing over. While previous attempts have failed, Seth will only listen to the ghost whispering techniques of one Jennifer Love Hewitt (Even though she is a TV character, Seth doesn’t want to hear it.). But Seth is going to find himself dragged into the middle of a battle that may not be as simple as vampire rights, but a battle that sees two former enemies united towards a common goal – revenge and conquest of the normal people.

After all, it’s only (in)human nature…

Walking With A Ghost

No matter which way you go
No matter which way you stay

Out of my mind, out of my mind

Just Close Your Eyes...

Hearts uninspired, trapped inside somebody's dream
Too close to the fire, yet cold and numb with the pain
But the fever has broken, and the river has run to the sea
Washed to the ocean, and saved by a voice inside me.
Inside me a light was turned on
Then I was alive

If you close your eyes your life, a naked truth revealed
Dreams you never dreamed, and scars never healed
In the darkness, light will take you to the other side
You'll find me waiting there
You'll see if you just close your eyes

Hungry Like the Wolf...

In touch with the ground, I'm on the hunt I'm after you
Smell like I sound I'm lost in a crowd and I'm hungry like the wolf.
Straddle the line in discord and rhyme I'm on the hunt I'm after you,
Mouth is alive with juices like whine and I'm hungry like the wolf.

Human Behaviour

They're terribly moody,
Then all of a sudden turn happy.
But... oh... to get involved in the exchange,
Of human emotions is ever so satisfying.

So, uh, what is going on here?

Good question, anonymous question-asking title person.

This will be the main site and home to a short novel I am penning in the month of November as part of National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo as they like to call it. For the uninitiated, NaNoWriMo is just a fun (yet insane) method of writing at least a 50,000 word novel starting on November 1st and ending on November 30th.

Well, that's all fine and dandy like sour candy, but what's with the title and the format of this blog thingee here?

Another good question. As it stands right now, "(In)Human Nature" is the working title of my novel. The planned format right now will be a preview, possible character bios, and random music selections that I think fit in with the theme of the novella in progress. In November, I will be posting a chapter as I finish it and hope to have the entire project posted by the end of the month.

Then what?

Who knows? Leave it here for the

world to peruse and possibly mock at their will? Use it as a base to expand it into a bigger novel word-wise? Bugger all? Haven't got *that* far into my thinking yet. All I know is I would like to have the story finished within the month, plot holes be damned. Then hopefully fix things like that in the coming months.

So you've obviously done this before. What happened with your other projects?

I have them on another blog. One is as finished as I think I want it to be finished. I left one on a massive cliffhanger that I may be inspired to finish once this sprint is done. The last one, I dunno what I plan to do about it. Maybe revisit it and see where I was going with it as I totally lost focus on it.

So does this mean "Apocalypse Wow! 2!" will be finally done?!

Quiet you! :P

Sorry. But how will this differ
from last year?

Well, for one, I think my real life situation won't be as hectic as last year was. Second, I think if I return to something to a bit of my comfort zone, I might be more focused. Third, hard to say really. You just have to tune in to find out, won't you?

Indeed I shall. So what's this story going to be about?

I will have a more detailed preview later but here's a cliff notes version of it: a vampire living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada launches a lawsuit against the mainstream entertainment industry for its portrayal of his species. He wins the suit, and inadvertently becomes a figurehead for a movement in obtaining equal rights for the undead. Meanwhile, a series of unexplained murders are investigated by a hard-nosed female detective struggling with a literal beast within - she's a werewolf who struggles keeping her two worlds separate from each other. Making matters worse for her is an Ukrainian werewolf hunter is brought onto the case, as well as her room-mate - a ghost who was the former tenant of her condo and has no desire moving on - tests her patience and could expose her past.

Sound... interesting... yet familar...

Well I think there are some obvious influences, but I am hoping to make a somewhat original narrative based off those influences.

Okay then. Good luck.

Thanks. Just keep checking back here for more content as it comes.

Human Touch

Tell me in a world without pity
Do you think what I'm asking is too much?
I just want something to hold on to
And a little of that human touch
Just a little of that human touch
